How do you predict the company will be different in 5 years? How do you see your contribution to that change? What most excites you about the future of the company?
I see our domestic growth continuing on its current trajectory of both organic growth and growth by acquisition. We will add more of our services into our current locations while looking for new partners that offer synergy with our existing markets, with a by-product being additional geographic expansion. In addition, I anticipate continued growth in our international business, propelled in Latin America by our recent Mexico City Airport project win. My primary contribution will be to help develop our existing talent, as well as find new talent that shares these same aspirations for growth.
In what ways can employees can help to drive long-term growth besides just doing a good job at day to day tasks?
The professional services business of engineering requires a tremendous amount of human interaction. What often differentiates our people from our competitors is our ability to build relationships based on trust and communication, which often leads to long-term business friendships that contributes to new business and growth. Doing a good job, and in fact doing a great job, should be the norm. Build a friendship along with doing great work and you then contribute to long-term growth.
What do you wish you knew at the start of your career that took years to understand?
Perhaps the one thing that I have come to understand over the years is that growth is an absolute, and without it, every organization will plateau and likely suffer over time. I have experienced myself the opportunities that are created in a growing environment, and that it enriches your professional and personal lives.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to a young professional looking to succeed?
I always tell people that this business is “the ultimate team sport”, and therefore your teammates are critically important to your success, and the success of the firm. Therefore, my advice is to be the team player that everyone wants on their project internally, and our clients want on their projects. Believe me, it gets recognized.
What is the best part of working at Ross & Baruzzini?
I love the fact that I am still working with so many of the same people that I worked with on projects more than 25 years ago. These people are long-standing friends, and many of us have “grown up” together. Now, it is so cool to see the next generation taking leadership positions, and in some cases, these are people that I have had direct involvement in helping them as they grow their career. It is personally very gratifying to see people grow and succeed, and be happy people.
